A Lubbock Bowling League Gives June Burr A Place To Belong
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed October 8, 2026

June Burr has been bowling since college. After moving from Washington to Lubbock 5 years ago, she found a league that gave her a weekly place to gather with people of different ages.
Burr is legally blind, and she bowls with the Work Dodgers every Wednesday at Whitewood Lanes near 50th Street and Memphis Avenue.
The league includes older bowlers and younger substitutes, including a recent high school graduate. Burr said that mix is part of what she enjoys about showing up.
League president Dianne Black said Burr’s determination encourages other members to keep participating. Black, who said she has bowled for about 50 years, described Burr as someone the group can count on to be there.
Both women described the league as a source of connection and friendship beyond the scores.
“It’s a happy thing for me,” Burr said. “I just really enjoy the interaction.”
