A SEVEN PERCENT MORTGAGE IS NOW A LUBBOCK ECONOMIC STORY. NOT JUST A HOUSING STORY
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed September 29, 2026

The average United States rate on a 30 year fixed mortgage reached 7.03 percent last week, the fifth straight increase and the highest since January 2025. That is up from 5.98 percent in February. On a $400,000 loan, the difference is about $276 each month before taxes and insurance. Lubbock prices are lower than many major markets, but higher borrowing costs still reduce what buyers can afford and make owners with older low rate loans less willing to move. The effect reaches builders, contractors, furniture stores and banks. Cash buyers and savers may benefit from higher yields, while financed buyers carry the larger burden. The most useful local number is the payment a household can sustain after insurance, taxes and maintenance.
