AMARILLO BRINGS HELP UNDER 1 ROOF

People seeking help after domestic violence in Amarillo will have investigators and support services closer together under an expanded partnership between police and Family Support Services. The police department is moving its domestic violence squad into the organization’s building.

The change aims to reduce the places survivors must visit to report what happened and find help. Police Chief Thomas Hover said domestic disturbances are among the department’s 10 most frequent types of calls, with approximately 6,000 such calls each year.

Family Support Services served more than 6,200 domestic violence survivors last year. Its leadership said it is also seeing concerns about violence escalating in some cases.

Those figures describe different measures: police calls and people served. They should not be added together as a count of separate incidents. The partnership comes as October’s domestic violence awareness efforts begin, with plans for advocates and investigators to share a location.
