Amarillo residents can request a free police home security assessment
Written by THE806ER STAFF-KW · Filed November 2, 2026

Amarillo residents looking for a practical way to improve home security can request a free assessment from the Amarillo Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit. The department says an officer will visit the property, examine its security and provide recommendations.
The service is meant to help residents identify steps they can take before a crime happens. APD describes recommendations at both a minimum and maximum level, giving a household information to consider rather than promising that one purchase or change will prevent every incident.
There is no charge for the assessment. Residents can contact the Crime Prevention Unit through the department’s Public Information Office to arrange a visit. APD also lists free security surveys for businesses, giving owners a separate option for reviewing a commercial property.
The department cautions that there is no way to guarantee a home will never be targeted. An assessment provides a chance to look at a specific property with a trained officer and ask questions about its vulnerabilities. It is a prevention service, rather than a substitute for reporting an emergency or an incident that has already occurred.
