Corley Says Private Text Fueled His Removal From Office

Lubbock County Commissioner Jason Corley says a text to Kent Hance, Texas Tech’s former chancellor, helped lead to his removal in December 2025.

The November 14 message identified Corley as running for Congress and asked what he could do for Texas Tech. Corley says Hance forwarded it to County Judge Curtis Parrish.

The screenshot shows delivery but does not establish forwarding. The forwarding claim has not been independently verified.

Timing matters because Texas’ automatic resignation provision depends on when certain officeholders become candidates for another office. Parrish relied on the text and an exploratory committee announcement as evidence that Corley had become a candidate before the deadline.

Corley maintains the private message did not amount to a public announcement. A judge temporarily restored him after Parrish appointed Mark Meurer.

Meurer’s appeal was dismissed September 30 at his request. The dismissal ended the appeal without deciding whether Corley had automatically resigned.
