Disputed Mailers Draw West Texas Forgery Probe

A West Texas district attorney opened a forgery investigation into mailers that appeared to come from a transgender rights organization during early voting in Texas.

Sarah Stogner, who serves Loving, Reeves and Ward counties, said the source of the pamphlets remained unknown. Her office was examining potential forgery, and said the inquiry could expand.

The materials repeatedly referenced the Transgender Education Network of Texas. The organization denied involvement and said the mailers were intended to damage its reputation and influence voters.

A group listed as the sender was formed as a Wyoming limited liability company in September. The mailers used a Houston area post office box.

State Rep. Jeff Leach sought an investigation after receiving information that the communications might not originate from the organization whose name they used.

The inquiry still has not established who financed or sent the materials. No criminal finding was announced as the investigation continued.
