Editorial: Gambling Ads Reach Lubbock’s Sports Fans

Lubbock families watching sports this weekend can encounter betting promotions even when nobody plans to wager.

Research published this month examined online gambling advertising alongside digital activity from 419 users. Some participants received 50, 100 or more gambling ads in a week.

The researchers also examined periods after a user had gone 24 hours without gambling activity. They found that 8.3% of the advertising exposures they studied in those circumstances were followed by a gambling touchpoint within the next 24 hours.

The finding shows an association. It does not prove that an individual ad caused someone to gamble, and the sample should not be treated as a count of Lubbock residents.

The local question is how much of this marketing enters the same feeds and broadcasts families use for ordinary sports coverage.

Texas Tech professor Jimmy Sanderson has described live sports as a valuable audience for advertisers. The promotions are sales messages that surround the game.
