LIMITED UNITED STATES AND CHINA TARIFF CUTS OFFER SOME FARM RELIEF, BUT THE SOUTH PLAINS IMPACT IS NOT YET CLEAR
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed September 29, 2026

The United States and China have listed about $30 billion in goods from each country for reduced tariffs after extending their trade truce through January 10. China’s list includes American corn, wheat, sorghum, vegetable oils, meat and dairy. Soybeans were excluded, and cotton was not identified among the headline commitments, so South Plains producers should not assume an immediate new market for this crop. The countries have not published a firm implementation date for every reduction. Supporters see a modest opening for farm exports and lower costs. Skeptics note that disputes over technology, rare earth minerals and other trade barriers remain. For West Texas, actual purchases will matter more than the announcement’s size.
