LUBBOCK HEARS AN 18 MONTH DATA CENTER PAUSE TODAY AND WEIGHS A SEPARATE HOLD UNTIL SAFEGUARDS EXIST
Lubbock City Council will hold a public hearing today on a citizen initiative seeking an 18 month moratorium on data centers with high water and energy use. The agenda also carries a separate council resolution stating that large scale data centers should not be developed inside city limits until regulations protect public resources, health and safety. The two items are not the same. One comes from the citizen petition and refers to Lubbock and Lubbock County. The other is the council’s policy statement for the city. Executive session begins at 12:30 p.m. and the open meeting starts at 2 p.m. at Citizens Tower, 1314 Avenue K. People who want to speak must complete the meeting form by 2 p.m. If the initiative is rejected, organizers may pursue placement on a future general election ballot.
