Lubbock May Let Neighbors Petition to Pave Alleys

Lubbock property owners could get a formal process for requesting alley paving under a proposal scheduled for Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

The ordinance would establish a petition process to pave and improve unimproved alleys, with the cost assigned to the adjoining property owners. It is listed for a 1st reading, so the agenda does not establish that the proposal has passed.

The item concerns who requests the improvement and who pays for it. It should not be confused with an announcement that every unpaved alley in Lubbock will be paved using general city funds.

Council members are scheduled to reconvene at 5:30 p.m. October 27 at Citizens Tower, 1314 Avenue K. Residents wishing to comment on a posted agenda item must complete the meeting’s signup form by 5:30 p.m.

The proposal appears on the regular agenda rather than the consent agenda. Its placement allows council members to consider it separately. Any adopted requirements will depend on the ordinance council ultimately approves.
