Lubbock planning panel will consider new data center rules Thursday

Lubbock’s Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to consider proposed rules for large scale data centers and power infrastructure Thursday, November 5. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Citizens Tower Council Chambers, 1314 Avenue K.

The posted agenda calls for a recommendation to City Council on amendments to the Unified Development Code. The listed subjects include definitions, the land use matrix and specific use standards for data centers and power generation, transmission and distribution.

This is a proposed regulatory change. The agenda does not establish that a particular data center has been approved, that construction has started or that the new rules are already in effect. It expressly identifies City Council as the final approval authority for the code amendments.

Residents who want to speak on a posted agenda item must complete the meeting’s signup form no later than 6 p.m. Thursday. The proposal gives residents a concrete public meeting to follow as Lubbock considers how to handle these land uses. The next step is the commission’s consideration and recommendation, rather than a final decision being announced in advance.
