LUBBOCK RESIDENT WARNS OF CONVINCING JURY DUTY SCAM USING SPOOFED COURT AND SHERIFF NUMBERS TO DEMAND THOUSANDS
A Lubbock resident is warning others about a jury duty phone scam that can look surprisingly legitimate on caller ID.
The resident told The806er callers are spoofing numbers associated with judges, courts and sheriff offices, then telling people they missed a jury summons and now have a citation, bond or warrant for their arrest. The caller allegedly demands between $5,000 and $15,000 and warns the person they could be arrested if they are stopped by police without paying.
The scam matches warnings issued by courts and consumer protection officials across Texas. Authorities say scammers can manipulate caller ID so an authentic government number appears on the screen.
Courts and law enforcement agencies do not call residents demanding immediate payment to avoid arrest for missing jury duty.
Anyone receiving a call like this should hang up, avoid providing financial or personal information and independently contact the court or law enforcement agency using an official number.
