LUBBOCK’S YOUNGEST RACERS TO COMPETE IN SECOND ANNUAL TRICYCLE DERBY AT SAFETY CITY

LUBBOCK, Texas — Children ages 3 to 5 will have an opportunity to race their peers while learning important safety lessons during the second annual Tricycle Derby at Safety City.

The family friendly event is being organized through a partnership between Lubbock ISD and the City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department. It will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Safety City, located at 4500 Ave. U.

Organizers said the derby was created to introduce young children to safety education through an activity that combines learning, exercise and friendly competition. Racers will be divided into separate heats based on their ages.

The current race schedule includes:

* 3 year olds beginning at 9:15 a.m. * 4 year olds beginning at 10 a.m. * 5 year olds beginning at 11 a.m.

Race times may change depending on participation and how quickly each heat is completed. Families are encouraged to arrive at least 10 minutes before their child’s scheduled race so organizers have time to check participants in and prepare them for the course.

Children do not have to own a tricycle to participate. Tricycles will be available at Safety City, while families who prefer to use their own equipment may bring a tricycle from home.

The event is open to the public, but registration is required. Advanced registration is encouraged to help organizers plan the heats and make sure enough equipment is available. Walk in racers may also participate if space remains.

Although the races are intended to be fun, the event also gives children an opportunity to practice listening to instructions, remaining aware of their surroundings and safely sharing a roadway style course with other young riders.

The derby is part of a continuing partnership between the city and Lubbock ISD to provide educational activities for local families. Lubbock ISD currently serves more than 23,000 students and describes its mission as nurturing, developing and inspiring every child, every day.

Families can register their children through the official Tricycle Derby registration page. Only children ages 3 to 5 are eligible to race.
