SON FACES AN AGGRAVATED ASSULT CHARGE AFTER HIS FATHER WAS FOUND DEAD IN A LUBBOCK HOME

Justo Mendez Jr., 36, is being held on a $500,000 bond after police found his father, Justo Mendez Sr., 74, dead inside a home in the 6100 block of Avenue S on Sunday morning. Court records say the younger Mendez told an officer the two had a bad fight and that he had taken about 50 Xanax tablets. Officers reported bruising on the older man’s face and lower leg, and a witness told investigators that a black steel pry bar near the sofa appeared to have blood on it. Authorities accuse Mendez Jr. of striking his father with a deadly weapon and causing serious bodily injury. He is charged with aggravated assault involving family violence, not murder. The cause of death remains under investigation, and every allegation must be proven in court.
