THE U.S. ADDED 29,000 JOBS IN SEPTEMBER; LUBBOCK’S LATEST PAYROLL COUNT IS UP 1%

The United States added 29,000 payroll jobs in September, and unemployment held at 4.2%. Revisions lowered the combined July and August employment totals by 60,000. Lubbock’s latest metro figures cover August. They show 176,300 payroll jobs, up 1% from a year earlier. Private education and health services rose 2.3% to 26,400. Leisure and hospitality rose 2.5% to 24,200, while professional and business services rose 3.4% to 15,200. Growth was uneven. Local mining, logging and construction employment fell 1.7% over the year. Financial activities fell 2.3%. Lubbock’s August unemployment rate was 3.9%. The local figures are preliminary and not seasonally adjusted. They cover a different month and adjustment method from September’s national report, limiting direct comparisons.
