UIL Approves Shot Clock and Playoff Changes
Written by THE806ER STAFF-KW · Filed October 22, 2026

Texas high school sports could look different in coming seasons after the UIL Legislative Council approved proposals affecting basketball, playoffs and girls flag football. The changes still require approval from the commissioner of education.
A 35 second varsity basketball shot clock would begin no earlier than the 2028 to 2029 school year for Class 5A and 6A. The proposed schedule reaches Class 3A and 4A no earlier than 2030 to 2031, followed by Class 1A and 2A no earlier than 2032 to 2033.
The rollout can be adjusted as implementation is monitored. The decision does not put a shot clock into this season’s games.
The council also approved home field advantage for the first playoff round in all conferences and team sports starting in the 2027 to 2028 school year.
Girls flag football received approval in concept as a pilot, beginning no earlier than 2028 to 2029, with additional rules still to be developed. For 806 schools, the decisions provide time to plan for the proposed changes.
