UMC And Texas Tech Dispute OB/GYN Hiring
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed October 8, 2026

UMC and Texas Tech have released competing explanations about replacing 2 OB/GYN physicians, adding to Lubbock’s debate over access to women’s health care.
UMC CEO Mark Funderburk said Dr. Amy Richards and Dr. Amber Coon received clinical faculty appointments when UMC Physicians established its practice in 2021. He said Texas Tech would no longer grant appointments needed to replace them as UMC employees after their resignations.
Texas Tech Health Sciences Center alleged the hiring violated state law and the institutions’ agreement. It said replacement hiring would undermine its recruitment.
The university said it has 26 faculty in women’s health specialties, including 12 obstetricians, and is accepting new patients.
UMC said demand supports practices run by both institutions. The statements describe a hiring dispute between 2 practices.
