Volunteers Helped Lubbock Residents Get Their Heaters Ready for Winter

Lubbock residents who struggle to afford furnace service received free help Saturday as volunteers inspected heating equipment, repaired minor problems and checked for hazards.

The work was part of Heat the Town, which reached its 26th year. The South Plains Texas Air Conditioning Contractors Association partnered with students from the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center for the effort.

Organizers reported more than 130 volunteers and 35 students from Lubbock ISD and Lubbock Cooper ISD taking part.

The visits focused on households in need as winter approaches and residents begin turning on their heaters. Organizers said older adults who cannot afford furnace service or repairs are an especially important part of the program.

Students worked alongside industry professionals, gaining practical experience while helping residents prepare their homes for colder weather.

The effort brought that training directly into the community. Under professional guidance, students assisted with inspections and minor repairs while volunteers looked for hazards in the heating systems residents will rely on during winter.

Community coverage is made possible with support from System X Technologies. Message their team.
