3,700 South Plains students set to receive books
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed October 16, 2026

More than 400 volunteers are scheduled to reach over 3,700 South Plains students Thursday through United We Read, a literacy effort that sends children home with a book of their own.
The October 15 event brings community volunteers into second grade classrooms. This year’s featured title is Say Something! by Peter H. Reynolds, which explores different ways children can use their voices.
Participating students are set to receive the book, a reading guide and a service guide that connects families with community resources. Volunteers also help lead an activity related to the story.
The effort includes Lubbock ISD, Frenship, Lubbock Cooper, Shallowater, Abernathy, New Deal, Idalou, Roosevelt and Southland school districts.
Now in its ninth year, the campaign focuses on building reading skills before third grade, when classroom work depends on using reading to learn other subjects.
United Way and participating districts coordinate the visits, with materials intended for families to use at home.
