40 WINS IN 58 GAMES: JOEY McGUIRE REACHES TEXAS TECH MILESTONE FASTER THAN ANY COACH IN SCHOOL HISTORY
Joey McGuire is giving Red Raider fans another reason to be proud of what is being built in Lubbock.
Texas Tech’s 29 to 7 victory at Colorado marked McGuire’s 40th win as head coach. He reached that total in just 58 games, becoming the fastest coach in program history to earn 40 victories.
That works out to a 40 and 18 record and a winning percentage of approximately 69%.
Saturday’s victory also moved Tech to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play. For the first time in school history, the Red Raiders have opened consecutive seasons with 5 straight wins.
The milestone came on a night that required patience and a strong response. Tech trailed Colorado 7 to 3 at halftime before outscoring the Buffaloes 26 to 0 in the second half.
The defense intercepted 4 passes and held Colorado scoreless after its opening touchdown. Tech also finished without committing a turnover, showing how protecting the football and creating takeaways can decide a game even when the offense struggles to establish a rhythm.
For McGuire, the result added another victory to a tenure that has raised expectations around Texas Tech football.
Reaching 40 wins faster than any previous Tech coach gives fans something concrete to celebrate. It also raises the standard for what comes next. An undefeated start brings excitement, but it brings responsibility to keep improving as conference play continues.
There are still things to clean up. Saturday’s first half made that clear. But a road victory, a historic start and a coaching milestone belong in the conversation, too.
40 wins. 58 games. A place in Texas Tech history.
Congratulations, Coach McGuire. Guns up.
