Amarillo police teach educators gang prevention

Panhandle educators met with Amarillo police Wednesday to learn how to recognize gang activity and help keep students from being recruited.

The October 14 conference took place at Region 16 in Amarillo. Members of the department’s gang task force discussed what school employees can watch for and what may draw young people toward gangs.

Community engagement officer Hugo Blanco focused on prevention and the role adults can play before a student becomes involved. Sgt. Marcus Bettag, with the Violent Crimes Unit, said the task force has maintained a presence since forming in May.

Bettag said crime has declined since the task force formed, but did not provide figures in the public account. He also encouraged residents to bring concerns directly to officers.

“Understand we are trying,” Bettag said. “We are making forward progress.”

The training centered on giving educators information they can use on campus. The event brought local police and school employees together around student safety.
