PANHANDLE EDUCATORS GET TRAINING TO RECOGNIZE GANG RECRUITMENT

Educators from across the Panhandle met with Amarillo police this week to learn how to recognize gang activity and help keep young people from being recruited.

The Wednesday conference at Region 16 brought school personnel together with members of the police department’s gang task force. Community engagement officer Hugo Blanco discussed factors that can draw juveniles toward gangs and ways adults can help prevent that involvement.

Sgt. Marcus Bettag, with the Violent Crimes Unit, said the department’s task force has maintained a presence since forming in May. He attributed a reduction in crime to that work and pointed to assistance from outside agencies during Operation Summer Shield.

Bettag also encouraged residents to bring concerns to police. “If you do have those concerns, please share them with us,” he said.

The training gave school staff information about prevention and working with police.
