Barry Corbin Came Home to West Texas Honors

Actor Barry Corbin returned to Lubbock for Texas Tech homecoming, where leaders honored a career that began with roots in Lamesa and Lubbock.

Corbin graduated from Monterey High School and studied theater arts at Texas Tech. He served 2 years in the Marine Corps before returning to the university.

Lamesa Mayor Hayden Davis, Lubbock Mayor Mark McBrayer and state Sen. Charles Perry presented proclamations. Corbin called the recognition from his hometown the “ultimate compliment.”

His acting career began in Shakespearean theater in the 1960s and took him to Broadway and regional stages before film and television.

Audiences know him as Maurice Minnifield in “Northern Exposure,” Bob Davis in “Urban Cowboy” and Coach Whitey in “One Tree Hill.”

“I had a great childhood and a great upbringing,” Corbin said.

He recalled taking that experience with him to New York and California. Corbin said he was surprised by recent changes across the South Plains, but the region will always remain home.
