East Lubbock asphalt fight heads to hearings

Parkway Cherry Point residents are now challenging an asphalt operation near their homes with zoning hearings pending.

Rose Wilson, who has lived in her home nearly 50 years, described dust reaching the neighborhood. “All I know is it’s worse than it ever has been,” she said.

An attorney representing the neighborhood association says the property’s residential zoning should prevent industrial operations. The association filed a complaint in August.

City official Stuart Walker said inspectors identified a violation involving the property owner. He said staff believe Webber LLC has stopped operating the plant and is dismantling the site. The company has until December 7 to remove everything, Walker said.

The property owner has requested a change from residential to light industrial zoning. A Planning and Zoning Commission hearing is scheduled November 5, followed by a City Council hearing December 1.

The requested change remains pending. Public hearings are the next step in that review.
