Fired Lake Manager Runs for the Board That Removed Him

Buffalo Springs Lake’s former general manager is asking voters for a seat on the governing board that removed him from his job in July.

Greg Thornton is running for the at large position on the Lubbock County Water Control and Improvement District board. Incumbent Casey Klingensmith is also seeking the seat, which is decided by voters across Lubbock County.

Board members accused Thornton of using his position to obtain permits for his private construction business without paying required fees. Thornton disputed that account and said missing permits and payments resulted from an administrative error.

The board also barred his company, GT Construction, from working at the lake. Thornton has challenged the board’s handling of the dispute.

Klingensmith said the current board is working to change past practices and questioned relying on higher gate fees to raise revenue. The election places competing accounts of the lake’s management before voters. Allegations surrounding Thornton’s removal remain disputed.
