HIGHER COMBAT PAY TOOK EFFECT FOR ELIGIBLE TROOPS OCTOBER 1
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed October 6, 2026

West Texas military families have a pay change to review if a loved one is serving in a qualifying dangerous location.
The Pentagon increased hostile fire pay from $225 to $450 a month and raised the monthly cap for imminent danger pay from $225 to $275. The changes took effect October 1 across the military services.
Hostile fire pay requires a qualifying hostile incident and commander authorization. Imminent danger pay applies to service in designated locations where troops face specified risks.
Authorized hostile fire pay is paid at the full monthly rate. Imminent danger pay is calculated for each qualifying day, up to the monthly cap. Troops cannot receive both in the same month.
This is the first increase in these special combat pay rates since 2002.
Eligibility depends on the service member’s assignment and qualifying conditions.
