Interstate 40 Bridge Work Begins Monday In Amarillo

Drivers traveling through Amarillo will encounter a new traffic pattern Monday as bridge maintenance begins on Interstate 40 at Nelson Street.

Both directions are scheduled to be reduced to 2 lanes. The work is expected to continue into early 2027, and the traffic control arrangement is planned to remain in place throughout the project.

That also means this is more than a brief closure affecting a single morning commute. Drivers using the corridor for work, deliveries or trips across the Panhandle should account for the reduced lanes when planning travel.

The schedule remains subject to weather, emergency work and other unexpected conditions. A completion estimate is not a guarantee that every restriction will end on a specific date.

Motorists are being asked to reduce speed through the work zone and leave enough time to reach their destinations safely. Drivers approaching Nelson Street should watch for lane markings, construction signs and changing traffic flow as the project begins.
