Meta Faces $25 Billion Facebook Privacy Penalty

The company behind Facebook has been ordered to pay New Mexico $25 billion after a jury found it misled the public about privacy and content moderation. The ruling Wednesday grew out of the Cambridge Analytica scandal involving information collected from Facebook users.

The jury found more than 43 million violations of state consumer protection law. New Mexico pursued its own trial while most other states reached a separate settlement with the company.

Meta plans to appeal. Its lawyers dispute how the state counted violations and argue prosecutors failed to prove the statements caused harm. The amount could change as the appeals process continues.

For Lubbock residents who use Facebook to follow family, promote a business or read local news, the case concerns how the platform described its handling of personal information.

The penalty is a New Mexico court award. It does not announce individual payments to Facebook users in Texas, and it should not be confused with a refund program.
