Parts Of The 806 Could Freeze Saturday

Parts of the northern South Plains and southwestern Texas Panhandle could see their first freeze of the season early Saturday, following a cold front later this week.

North winds and colder air are expected behind the front Thursday, with Friday afternoon temperatures generally topping out in the upper 50s.

Lubbock’s forecast calls for a Friday high near 58 and a Friday night low around 43. That is warmer than freezing, so the city forecast should not be mistaken for a freeze prediction across the 806.

Farther north and northwest, lighter winds and clearing skies could allow temperatures to briefly fall below 32 degrees Saturday morning. Forecasters say confidence in a widespread first freeze is still low.

The possibility gives residents with sensitive plants, outdoor animals or exposed water lines time to watch later forecasts and prepare if temperatures are lowered.

Dry conditions are expected over the weekend, with temperatures recovering afterward. The forecasts may still change.
