PLAINVIEW CLOSED SEPTEMBER WITH MORE THAN 5 INCHES OF RAIN AFTER STARTING THE MONTH HOT AND DRY
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed September 30, 2026

Plainview had recorded 5.05 inches of rain for September by Tuesday afternoon, more than 2 and a half times the city’s normal total of less than 2 inches for the month. The turnaround came after an unusually dry and hot start to September. Rain has fallen across parts of the South Plains nearly every day since September 24, with many locations receiving 2 to 3 inches over the weekend. Plainview measured 2.14 inches Tuesday, while Tulia reported 2.16 inches. Additional storms remained possible Wednesday as tropical moisture interacted with a larger storm system. Flood watches covered Bailey, Lamb, Castro and Swisher counties, where some locations could receive several more inches. The main concern is flooding rather than widespread severe weather. Rural roads, low water crossings and fields can become dangerous even after rain has ended upstream.
