Scurry County’s new sirens signal 2 warnings
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed October 16, 2026

Scurry County’s new outdoor warning system is operational, and residents are being asked to recognize the difference between its 2 siren sounds.
A continuous siren is used for weather alerts and means people should go inside and find a safe place immediately, according to Snyder’s emergency coordinator. An intermittent siren is used for fire warnings.
The county’s project was designed with 20 sirens, including 14 within Snyder, and service extending to Dunn, Fluvanna, Hermleigh and Ira.
The city says the sirens use solar power with battery backups. Alerts can be activated through the emergency operations center, county dispatch or authorized remote locations.
Outdoor sirens are primarily intended to reach people outside. Officials advise residents to maintain other ways to receive warnings, including weather radios and phone alerts.
Snyder also offers an emergency notification system residents can join through the city’s alerts service.
The system provides warnings across the county.
