STATE INVESTIGATORS COULD NOT DETERMINE WHAT STARTED AMARILLO FIRE THAT DAMAGED 77 HOMES

The state investigation into the Amarillo landfill fire that damaged 77 Potter County homes ended with its cause classified as undetermined.

Investigators identified the starting area as Cell 10 inside the landfill. The fire was reported May 17 near Bezner Drive and spread beyond the landfill the following afternoon during severe fire weather.

The report released Tuesday explained why investigators could not establish how it began. The active landfill was hazardous, and dirt placed over burning material had changed the scene. Cleanup and repairs also altered damaged properties.

The state reviewed social media posts involving a former city employee and reported finding no indication in that material that the fire was intentionally set.

The agency closed the case. The report identifies the origin while leaving the cause unresolved.
