TEXAS OIL AND GAS RACE PUTS DRILLING, POLLUTION AND ENERGY COSTS ON THE BALLOT
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed October 17, 2026

The race for a seat on the Texas Railroad Commission gives West Texas voters a choice between Republican Bo French and Democrat Jon Rosenthal over how the state should oversee oil and gas.
The commission regulates drilling, pipelines and the disposal of industry wastewater. Its decisions reach an industry that supports jobs and business activity across West Texas.
French has called for fewer regulations and more production, arguing that the agency should avoid standing in the industry’s way. He has also emphasized restrictions on foreign ownership of oil and gas wells.
Rosenthal, an engineer and state lawmaker, has proposed stronger action against repeat polluters, preparation of natural gas facilities for extreme weather and a wastewater injection fee to help fund abandoned well plugging.
The winner will join the 3 member commission after the November 3 election. Early voting begins Monday.
