Winter Heating Costs Depend On Your Fuel

West Texas homes could face different heating bills this winter depending on their fuel, according to the federal winter outlook.

The forecast projects energy spending will fall 9% for homes primarily heated with natural gas and 3% for those using propane. Homes relying on electricity are expected to spend 4% more.

These are national winter averages, not rates for a Lubbock home or a guarantee that a customer’s bill will fall.

The outlook assumes temperatures in the South will be similar to last winter. Electricity is a common heating source in the region, while natural gas and propane costs follow different markets.

Spending depends on equipment, the size and efficiency of a home, usage and the prices charged by its provider. The forecast considers warmer and colder scenarios because weather can change demand.

For residents comparing the numbers with their budget, the first question is which fuel does most of the heating. A national headline can describe different household costs.
