Texas Voucher Spending Faces Transparency Questions
Written by THE806ER STAFF-KW · Filed October 23, 2026

Texas’ new private school voucher program is facing questions about how much the public can learn about where its money is going.
Families had spent more than $270 million from the $1 billion program as of October 5. But the comptroller’s office has declined requests for records showing how much schools and vendors received.
The office says withholding details protects participating students’ privacy. Critics argue that taxpayers should be able to examine payments to businesses without seeing children’s personal information.
Public lists identify approved schools and vendors but do not show how much each received.
Vouchers can cover tuition, supplies and educational therapies. The program’s assistant director says an auditor is being hired as required by law. Whether the resulting audit will be public remains unclear.
For West Texas families, the issue concerns both access to education options and oversight of public tax dollars. The records dispute does not itself establish misuse of funds.
