ANALYSIS: WALL STREET’S RECORD AND LUBBOCK’S HOUSEHOLD COSTS MEASURE DIFFERENT THINGS
Written by The806er Previs Senior · Filed October 7, 2026

Wall Street reached a record Tuesday, but a stock index does not measure the cost of running a Lubbock household.
The S&P 500 rose 0.6% to a record. The index includes shares of major companies and is represented in many retirement accounts. A household’s investment results depend on what it owns.
The latest federal household spending report describes a different picture. In August, the personal consumption expenditures price index was 3.4% higher than a year earlier and rose 0.3% from July.
After adjusting for those price changes, disposable personal income was unchanged for the month. The national personal saving rate was 4.1%.
Stock prices and household costs can rise together. Neither report describes the finances of a particular Lubbock family. The spending figures are from August.
