What Inflation Numbers Can Tell Lubbock Families
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed October 12, 2026

A new national inflation report arrives Wednesday, but its headline number will not describe every Lubbock household’s experience at the store, gas pump or rental office.
The September consumer price report is scheduled for October 14 at 7:30 a.m. Central time. The latest report showed overall prices rising 3.4% over the year ending in August.
Gasoline prices increased 3.9% during August, while the shelter index rose 0.3%. Those categories affect households differently based on driving distances, housing arrangements and spending on each expense.
The national index tracks average changes across a basket of goods and services. Families with long commutes or recent rent increases can face different cost changes than other households.
Slower inflation does not automatically mean prices have returned to earlier levels. It can mean that prices are increasing more slowly. Wednesday’s figures provide a national measurement, while budgets remain shaped by local prices and personal spending.
