What Inflation Headlines Miss In Lubbock
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed October 15, 2026

Analysis: A national inflation number cannot show how much more a Lubbock family pays to cover the month. The mix of bills matters.
In August’s figures, before the October 14 report, consumer prices were 3.4% higher than a year earlier. Gasoline was up 27.4%, groceries were up 2.2% and shelter was up 3%.
The categories moved at different speeds. A family spending heavily on driving will experience the figures differently from one whose main expense is housing. Applying 3.4% to every purchase misses that difference.
Inflation measures a change in prices. A slower rate of increase means prices are climbing more slowly; it does not mean they have returned to earlier levels.
Monthly figures tell another story. Grocery prices were unchanged overall in August, even though the annual grocery index remained higher.
For readers, national data offer a benchmark. Rent notices, fuel receipts and grocery totals provide the household detail needed to understand what a headline means for a budget.
