Editorial: What Economic Confidence Means for Lubbock
Written by THE806ER STAFF-KW · Filed October 24, 2026

A national consumer survey offers a distinction for Lubbock readers: economic confidence is different from a measurement of local prices.
October’s consumer sentiment index was 48.0, nearly unchanged from 48.1 in September but below 53.6 a year earlier. Views of current economic conditions weakened as expectations for the future improved.
The survey also found that expectations for inflation over the coming year rose to 4.7%. That is what respondents expect, not a confirmed future inflation rate.
For a household deciding whether to replace a vehicle or buy an appliance, borrowing costs and the monthly payment may matter more immediately than a confidence score.
This survey does not measure Lubbock’s grocery bill, rent or wages. Its index is not the percentage of residents who approve of the economy.
A national headline can describe a broad pattern while leaving individual households with very different experiences. Local figures are needed to assess what Lubbock families can afford.
