Flooding Risk Builds Across the Western Panhandle

The western Texas Panhandle faces a growing heavy rain concern this weekend, as rain spreads from the far northwest into more of the region.

Today’s outlook places a low flooding risk in the far northwest during the evening and overnight. The larger concern develops later, with Saturday night into Sunday emerging as an important period for heavier rainfall.

The weekend outlook shows a slight risk of excessive rain across western portions of the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles. That category reflects the possibility of rainfall producing flash flooding, not a guarantee that every location will flood.

Severe thunderstorm chances are low, but an isolated stronger storm remains possible. The main concern is repeated or heavy rain and what it can do to roads and drainage.

Travelers heading toward Amarillo or the western Panhandle should keep the forecast for their actual route in mind. Conditions can differ from Lubbock’s forecast.

The areas at greatest risk may change as the system develops.
