Lubbock Artists Honor Loved Ones Through Día De Los Muertos

More than 40 artists are taking part in a Lubbock exhibition that explores how people remember loved ones through Día de los Muertos.

Celebración opened October 6 in the Buddy Holly Center’s Fine Arts Gallery and remains on view through November 15. Local and regional artists were invited to interpret the tradition by honoring departed relatives, friends and ancestors.

Artists also used varied materials and approaches to share their individual experiences of remembrance. Its focus is the history and meaning of the Mexican holiday.

A reception with participating artists is scheduled for Sunday, November 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. The center is located at 1801 Crickets Avenue, and visitors should check its public hours before planning a trip.

The gallery has 2,500 square feet for changing contemporary art exhibitions. Celebración continues its annual tradition of giving regional artists a place to share work while allowing the community to encounter expressions of memory and family history.
