Lubbock Council Backs Police And Fire Agreements As Homeowners Could Still See Higher City Tax Bills
Lubbock City Council gave initial approval Tuesday to a budget package that includes new agreements with police and firefighters and a proposed property tax rate that will return for a final vote September 8. The police agreement includes funding for 10 additional officers and a 5 percent raise for sworn personnel. The city also entered its first agreement with the firefighters association, a six year deal designed to move crews toward a 24 hour on and 72 hour off schedule while adding about 22 firefighters each year during the transition. City leaders used the no new revenue tax rate in the budget, but rising property values mean the average single family home is still projected to pay about $103 more in city property taxes. The budget received unanimous initial support, while Councilman David Bruegel voted against the tax rate.
