MONTEREY SURVIVED A WEEK 1 THRILLER. NOW THE PLAINSMEN GET AN ABILENE WYLIE TEAM BETTER THAN ITS RECORD

Monterey already gave Lubbock one of the craziest finishes of Week 1.

The Plainsmen found themselves trailing Coronado 28 to 9 before completely flipping the game and eventually escaping with a 36 to 35 victory.

Monterey scored 21 points during the third quarter and showed something coaches cannot always teach: the ability to stay composed when a game looks like it is getting away.

Friday night brings Abilene Wylie to Lubbock.

Wylie is 0 and 1, but that record deserves some context.

The Bulldogs lost only 13 to 7 against Brownwood and repeatedly moved the football into scoring territory. Wylie reached the red zone several times without converting those opportunities into points.

That makes this a dangerous matchup for Monterey.

The Plainsmen proved they can come back from a major deficit. This week the goal should be avoiding one altogether.

Allowing Wylie to control the early possessions and finish the drives it failed to finish last week could put Monterey right back into another fourth quarter fight.

WHAT TO WATCH

Can Monterey start fast after needing a massive comeback in Week 1?

Friday gives the Plainsmen a chance to move to 2 and 0 and show that last week’s comeback was more than just one wild night.
