SENATE ADVANCES COLLEGE SPORTS OVERHAUL THAT WOULD DIRECTLY AFFECT TEXAS TECH
The U.S. Senate voted 74 to 24 to begin debate on the Protect College Sports Act, clearing a major procedural hurdle but not giving the bill final approval. The bipartisan measure would create a national framework for college athletics, preserve a 22 percent revenue sharing cap for now, establish a player retention pool and set federal rules for transfers and five year eligibility. It would also protect athletes’ right to earn name, image and likeness income while giving schools and conferences broader antitrust protection. Supporters say one national system would reduce lawsuits and conflicting state rules. Critics, including the NAACP and several senators, argue the bill restricts athlete leverage and preserves an unfair model.
