FARM BILL ADVANCES IN SENATE AS SEPT. 30 DEADLINE NEARS FOR SOUTH PLAINS PRODUCERS

FARM BILL ADVANCES IN SENATE AS SEPT. 30 DEADLINE NEARS FOR SOUTH PLAINS PRODUCERS

The Senate Agriculture Committee advanced the Agricultural Act of 2026 on a 12 to 11 party line vote, sending the measure toward the full Senate after an earlier committee attempt failed. The House Agriculture Committee approved its version in April. Congress now has less than 2 weeks to replace or extend the current farm bill before it expires Sept. 30. The legislation matters directly to the South Plains because federal farm policy governs crop insurance, commodity support, conservation programs, rural development and nutrition assistance. Cotton producers and agricultural lenders will be watching both the final policy language and the timing. Senate passage would not finish the process because the House and Senate must agree on one version before it can become law.
