Should Teachers Be Allowed to Express Their Political Views at School?
A photograph reportedly showing teachers at Pearson Ranch Middle School wearing shirts supporting Democrat James Talarico is drawing attention to a question that extends beyond 1 candidate: Where should schools draw the line on employees’ political expression?
The allegation circulated through Libs of TikTok, which identified the campus as part of Round Rock ISD. The accompanying image shows 5 adults posing in a hallway, with campaign related hashtags appearing above the photograph.
The image alone does not establish when it was taken, whether the individuals were working at the time, whether students were present or whether district resources were used to promote a candidate. Those details matter when evaluating the conduct.
The Texas Ethics Commission explains that school district resources cannot be used to produce or distribute political advertising. That restriction includes using district equipment and employees’ paid work time for campaign activities.
Round Rock ISD has also published guidance stating that campaign materials cannot be distributed on district property without administrative review and permission. That guidance addresses distribution of materials and does not, by itself, resolve the question of the shirts pictured.
Determining whether this particular situation violated a rule would require more information about the circumstances and the applicable employee policies. The circulating allegation does not establish a violation.
The broader debate involves competing expectations. Teachers have personal political beliefs and participate in elections, while families expect students to receive instruction without pressure to support a particular candidate or party.
A discussion about government, elections or public policy also raises different questions from an employee displaying support for a specific campaign.
For parents and educators in the 806, the question is just as relevant: Should teachers be permitted to wear candidate shirts at school, or should campaign endorsements stay outside the school day regardless of political party?
