THE806ER POWER RANKS ALL 16 UNBEATEN 806 AREA TEAMS: WHY LIBERTY IS NO. 1
This is a power ranking of what each team has accomplished through Week Three, not a prediction that a smaller school would beat a larger school head to head. The806er considered opponent quality, scoring margin, road wins, classification and current statewide AP and computer standings. A perfect record got every team into the conversation, but every perfect record was not built the same.
Lubbock Cooper Liberty earned No. 1 after beating Memorial 49 to 14, 6A Frenship 44 to 13 and a 2 and 1 Greenwood team 56 to 25. The Patriots are also No. 6 in the statewide 4A Division II poll. Shallowater is No. 2 because its road comeback over Canadian is the strongest single win in this group, and it also defeated Childress and Seminole. Idalou is No. 3 after three convincing wins and a No. 2 statewide ranking in 3A Division II. Gruver is No. 4 after outscoring opponents 164 to 56 and rising to No. 1 in its division’s computer ranking.
Post landed at No. 5 after allowing only 19 points in three blowout wins. Randall is No. 6 as an unbeaten 4A Division I team. Ropes is No. 7 despite being ranked among the best 2A Division II teams because it has played only two games. Estacado is No. 8 after scoring 160 points, but the 52 to 50 Sweetwater escape and a lower computer standing kept the Matadors outside the top seven.
Wellington leads the second half at No. 9, followed by Littlefield, New Deal and Seagraves. West Texas and Wheeler have produced huge scores, but current computer strength and opponent quality place them at No. 13 and No. 14. Dimmitt ranks No. 15 because it has allowed 98 points, the most in this group. Vega is No. 16 because its early résumé and computer standing trail the other unbeaten teams, not because 3 and 0 should be dismissed.
Week Four will immediately test this list, especially with New Deal facing Seagraves and West Texas meeting Wheeler. Which team is too high or too low? Make your case with a score or an opponent, not just hometown loyalty.
