WHAT TRUMP’S $5,000 PROMISE MEANS FOR LUBBOCK FAMILIES
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed October 6, 2026

President Donald Trump renewed a campaign promise last week to send $5,000 to adult U.S. citizens if Republicans win control of the House and Senate.
For a Lubbock household with 2 eligible adults, the proposal as stated would mean $10,000. That is a calculation of the promise, rather than an approved payment.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has said congressional action would be needed and called the proposal a creative idea he would try to advance.
An independent budget analysis estimated that broad payments could cost about $1.2 trillion in a single year. Its analysis said the cost could be lower if higher earners were excluded.
Any household payment would depend on rules established in eventual legislation, including eligibility and funding.
The remarks supplied no payment date or application process. It remains an election promise.
