24. LUBBOCK SHOPPERS: NATIONAL GROCERY FIGURES SHOW A FLAT MONTH AND A HIGHER YEAR

Federal figures explain how slower inflation can coexist with a higher grocery total. In August, average grocery prices were unchanged from July but 2.2% above August 2025. Restaurant prices rose 3.4% over the year. The comparison period matters. A flat month means the average stopped rising during that month. It does not mean earlier increases disappeared or prices returned to last year’s level. Individual foods moved differently. Beef and veal were 5.9% higher than a year earlier, even after a monthly decline. Eggs were 23% lower over the year, despite increasing from July to August. For Lubbock households, the mix of groceries matters: two carts can show different changes depending on what is in them. These are national averages, not a survey of Lubbock stores.
