ABERNATHY STUDENT RETURNS TO SCHOOL AFTER BURN PIT EXPLOSION CAUSED SEVERE INJURIES
An Abernathy middle school student is back in class after surviving an explosion that burned more than 35 percent of his body. The student was burning feed sacks during chores when investigators believe an aerosol can hidden in the pit exploded. Burns extended from below his glasses to his thighs and included severe injuries to his arms and hands. He spent about a month in intensive care at UMC’s regional burn center and underwent several operations, grafts and skin treatment. His family says 7 additional laser procedures are planned, but he has returned to school and is again caring for his steer. The case is a reminder to inspect burn piles, keep pressurized containers away and maintain adult supervision whenever fire is used.
